Kits

Definition: AACR2 rules defined a kit as an item comprised of 3 or more categories of materials, none of which is identifiable as the predominant constituent of the item. Further, a multipart item is defined as a kit when either none of parts, or 3 or more parts, can be used independently. RDA cataloging rules have not altered this definition.

How to identify a Kit: If an item contains parts that belong to different material categories, for example a DVD with accompanying text, or a book with an inserted CD or CD-Rom, examine it closely to determine which part is predominant. In most cases the DVD would be defined as a “videorecording” with the accompanying material noted in the 300 field. The book would be considered “text”, again noting the accompanying material in the 300. A CD or cassette recording of a book, with a copy of the text accompanying it would be considered a “sound recording”.

Example A

t 245 10 Dr. Andrew Weil’s mind body tool kit /|cAndrew Weil.

r 300 2 audiod discs (2.5 hr.) :|bdigital ;|c4 3/4 in.; +|e1 guidebook (52 pages) + 25 training cards.

This item is composed of 2 sound discs, a guidebook, and 25 cards. Presuming each of these entities may be used independently, this item should be identified as a kit.
Example B

t 245 00 English for new Americans.|pEveryday life.

r 300 1 video disc (60 min.) :|bsound, color ;|c4 3/4 in. +|e1 audio disc (60 min. : digital ; 4 3/4 in.) + 1 workbook (122 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm.) + 1 audio script (56 pages ; 16 cm). The video, sound disc, and audio script are each designed to be used with the workbook. None of the components is meant to be used alone. For this reason, this item is identified as a kit.
Example C

t 245 04 The story of movies :|bto kill a mockingbird : a middle school teaching kit.

r 300 2 video discs :|bsound, color ;|c4 3/4 in. +|e(3 supplemental materials)

n 500 Supplemental materials include student activity booklet, teacher’s guide and graphic organizers, and DVD all encased in one container. This item is correctly described as a “videorecording”, because the DVD stands alone and may be viewed without reference to the accompanying materials, but the other components are not meant to be used independently.
Important points to remember:

The material type for kit is o. The bib record’s fixed field must have this entered correctly.
The Marc leader should have “rec type” o.
Kits that include non-book material such as DVDs or CDs should have a 007 field for each component.
The 008 field must include “type mat” b.
