Maine InfoNet Tech Report (Lynn Uhlman)

·         MIN is continuing to work on a plan for how to handle the regular uploading of large quantities of bibliographic records into the various statewide opacs. Stay tuned for more information.

·         Sierra will be upgraded to either 2.3 or 2.4 in October

·         MIN is working with the Minerva Codes Committee to consolidate and streamline itypes and ptypes. MIN asks that individual libraries be open minded when negotiating these issues.

·         Lynn will recommend cataloging mentors for MILS libraries.

Cataloging Report (Ellen Conway)

·         Ellen has been replacing the cataloging documents on the Maine InfoNet webpages to reflect RDA updates and has been adding new bibliographic examples to these documents. Be sure to replace any documents that you have made print-outs for.

·         If you recently emailed Ellen and asked her about cataloging a website, please contact her again as she has lost the original email.

·         Remove any urls that are attached to subject headings and added entries. For example:

b 700     1  Schuller,Gunther,|eperformer.|0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81016917.

b 700     1  Richman, Albert,|eperformer.|0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2003079885.

·         Ellen continues to get complaints about incomplete on order bib records. Guidelines for creating on order records are posted here https://www.maineinfonet.org/minerva/support/cataloging-serials/on-order-records/. Going forward, the cataloging standards committee is considering the suppression of  incomplete on order bib records until they are fixed by the inputting library.

Cataloging Standards Report (Katherine Morgan)

·         Attendance: Please be aware that there is one more live meeting before the year ends. Your library will need to attend or view 3 of the 4 meetings for 2016 by January 15, 2017.  You can view your library’s attendance by going to this link:  https://www.maineinfonet.org/minerva/governance/minervasolar-catalogers-round-table-meetings/

·         Viewing cataloging videorecordings: You will now need a password to login videorecordings: mcatrt. This is to ensure that everyone is aware that at times sensitive patron information might be viewed.

·         Cataloging Standards Committee: Valerie Frechette has left the committee so there is an opening. Valerie was representing the academic libraries. So if someone wants to serve on the committee, please email me at norcat@norway.lib.me.us

Miscellaneous Issues (Ellen Conway)

·         Ellen has made a request to retro-actively consolidate multi disc dvd sets to help clean up the backlog. For an example, Game of Thrones Season 1.

·         Star Wars issue: there are five different bibliographic records for Episodes 4,5, and 6 that came in a dvd/bluray combo pack. If the established guidelines were followed, this would cut the number of bibs down to three. The guidelines are posted here: https://www.maineinfonet.org/minerva/support/cataloging-serials/cataloging-rules-and-instruction/split-dvdblu-ray-discs/

·         Preferred titles or what is the purpose of the 130 field?

o   Preferred titles are to RDA what Uniform titles were to AACR2

o   They are correct and are included in the authority file so do leave them in the bib record

o   They are used for conflict resolution when there is not author in the main entry. For example:

u 130     0              Hawaii Five-O (Television program : 2010).|nSeason 1.

t 245      10           Hawaii Five-O  .|nThe first season.

o   If an author is present in the main entry, then a 240 field can be used.

·         Difference between 505 field and 730 field

o   505 = transcribed from item in hand

o   730 = authorized title

·         Do items in reserve collections need full bibliographic records? Yes, unless you plan on suppressing them from the opac.
