Introduction<\/h1>\n

In 2011, nine Maine library partners formed the Maine Shared Collections Strategy<\/a> (MSCS): Portland Public Library, Bangor Public Library, the Maine State Library, University of Maine, University of Southern Maine, Colby College, Bates College, Bowdoin College, and Maine InfoNet. MSCS was supported in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). One of the outcomes of the project was the implementation of a state-wide delivery service for both E-book-On-Demand (EOD) and Print-On-Demand (POD) to complement the physical delivery service.<\/p>\n

Maine libraries look for innovative ways to improve the patron experience. Large-scale digital collections such as the HathiTrust<\/a> and Google Books<\/a> provide an opportunity to expand access to books previously inaccessible to patrons in Maine library catalogs.<\/p>\n

These guidelines are intended to make Maine library patrons aware of the EOD and POD services available to them and provide guidance on how to take advantage of these services.<\/p>\n

Ebook-On-Demand Services<\/h1>\n

What is E-book-On-Demand?<\/h2>\n

E-book-On-Demand (EOD) is a service where individuals can view and download digitized copies of works in online digital collections such as the HathiTrust<\/a> \u00a0and Google Books<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Is this service available now?<\/h2>\n

Yes, approximately 1.4 million HathiTrust digitized titles have been added to the state-wide library MaineCat<\/a> to make the digital copies easily discoverable alongside any available MaineCat<\/a> library copies. The records contain links to Google Books<\/a> when available, HathiTrust<\/a>, and the Print-On-Demand request service (see below). See example:<\/p>\n

What can I view?<\/h2>\n

Clicking on the \u201cRead online from HathiTrust\u201d link will take you to the HathiTrust<\/a> catalog where you can view fully works that are public domain when viewed from anywhere in the world. These are works published anywhere in the world prior to 1873. Also viewable are works that are public domain only when viewed from the United States. These are works published prior to 1923 in the U.S.<\/p>\n

Clicking on the \u201cAccess via Google Books\u201d link (when available) will take you to the Google Books<\/a> catalog where you can also view a copy of the work.<\/p>\n

What can I download?<\/h2>\n

Clicking on the \u201cRead online from HathiTrust\u201d link will take you to the HathiTrust<\/a> where as well as viewing the work you can also select in the \u201cGet this Book\u201d heading (on the left side of the window) \u201cDownload this page\u201d which allows you to download single-page PDFs of all public domain works.<\/p>\n

Clicking on the \u201cDownload whole book\u201d link in the \u201cGet this Book\u201d heading (on the left side of the window) will allow you to download a full-PDF of public domain works that are not subject to third-party agreements.<\/p>\n

One such third-party agreement is for material digitized by Google. HathiTrust have taken steps to prevent bulk download of materials Google have digitized, which means that some works will have \u201cPartner login required\u201d under \u201cDownload whole Book\u201d and can only be downloaded by a patron of a HathiTrust partner institution (see \u201dWhat more can I access as a patron of a HathiTrust partner?\u201d).<\/p>\n

However, those works with Google restrictions should also have a link to Google Books<\/a> in the MaineCat record and clicking on this link will take you to Google Books<\/a> where in most cases the work will be available for anyone to download in full.<\/p>\n

The easiest way to download a work in Google Books is to click on the \u201cEBOOK-FREE\u201d or \u201cREAD EBOOK\u201d links on the left hand side of the Google Books window.<\/p>\n

In most cases you can choose whether you want to download a EPUB or PDF version.<\/p>\n

Some Google Books works will have the text “No eBook available” on the left hand side of the Google Books window.<\/p>\n

However, in most cases you can still download a PDF copy by going to the the gear\/settings drop down link on the right hand side of the Google Books window and selecting “Download PDF”.<\/p>\n

Note: Downloaded works can be saved to your computer. If you have a Google account you can add the downloaded work to your Google Drive.<\/p>\n

Can I download a portion of a book?<\/h2>\n

No, both HathiTrust and Google Books currently don\u2019t offer the ability to download a portion of a book such as an article or chapter.<\/p>\n

What more can I access as a patron of a HathiTrust partner institution?<\/h2>\n

Patrons of HathiTrust<\/a> \u00a0partner libraries have increased levels of access to works within the HathiTrust. Currently the University of Maine (Orono) and Colby College are the only Maine library partners. Patrons of the University of Maine (Orono) and Colby College can download works only available to partner institutions (indicated by the \u201cPartner login required\u201d) message by clicking on the \u201cDownload whole Book\u201d link.<\/p>\n

This link will open a window where you will be required to log in with the name of their partner institution and your campus login information.<\/p>\n

\"EOD_POD_links_11\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Partner libraries also have specialized access to in-copyright materials for patrons who have print disabilities. HathiTrust also allows other lawful uses of in copyright materials such as those afforded by U.S. copyright law: Section 108 (print replacement copies, digital access to applicable works) and fair uses of in-copyright materials.<\/p>\n

Do I have to go via MaineCat to access HathiTrust & Google Books?<\/h2>\n

No, independently of MaineCat<\/a> you can go directly to the respective HathiTrust<\/a> and Google Books<\/a> online catalogs to search for available works. Bibliographic and full text search are available in HathiTrust for all volumes (including in-copyright works) in the HathiTrust.<\/p>\n

How can I get a physical copy of something I\u2019m viewing?<\/h2>\n

You have a number of options for getting a physical copy of a work you are viewing:<\/p>\n
