Technical Services/Systems – Reclamation – Overview

In late 2011 – early 2012 the following libraries undertook an Reclamation Project to reconcile holdings in the local catalogs with OCLC, using OCLC’s BatchLoad Services:  Bangor Public Library (BYN),  Bates College (BTS), Bowdoin College (BBH), Colby Colby (CBY), Law and Legislative Reference Library (LLR), Maine State Library (MEA), University of Maine, Augusta (AUG), University of Maine, Bangor (BAQ), University of Maine, Machias (UMY), University of Maine, Orono (MEU) and University of Southern Maine (PGP, PG2, P8G).

Data exported to OCLC included mainly print materials which contained an 001 (oclc number) field, though occasionally materials were identified to send that did not contain an 001 but otherwise appeared to be valid marc records (e.g. not brief bibs, orders, reserves, etc.)  Electronic resources and materials marked as lost or missing were explicitly excluded, as were most government documents.

Below is an overview of the results, which included updating over 250,000 oclc numbers.

Records Sent New OCLC Number
Ursus 2,100,299 171,474
Colby 474,438 26,334
Bowdoin 624,164 37,848
Bates 656,926 25,101
TOTALS 3,855,827 260,757
