264 Dates: Publication and Copyright

Titles with only a Copyright Date

Below is the title page verso of Beautiful creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl:

Scanned Verso of Beautiful Creature

In this example, you can see that there is a © date and, at the bottom, a publication date: First Edition: December 2009.

In this circumstance the 008 and 264 would look like this:

  • 008      081202s2009 mau d 000 1 eng d
  • 264 #1 Boston :|bLittle, Brown and Company,|c2009.

There is no need for brackets around the 2009 or a second 264 field because the publication date is specifically stated somewhere in the book.

Titles with Publication Date and Copyright Date

This is the title page verso of Allegiant by Veronica Roth:

Scanned Verso of Allegiant

Here there is no publication date listed only a copyright date. Since we are inferring the publication date the 008 and 264 fields will look like this:

  • 008     130812t20132013nyu d 000 1 eng d
  • 264 #1 New York :|bKatherine Tegen Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers,|c[2013]
  • 264 #4 |c©2013.

Note: The Library of Congress has decided that if the publication date can be inferred to be the same as the copyright date they will not add the second 264 field. So you might see a record that looks like this:

  • 008     130812s2013 nyu d 000 1 eng d
  • 264 #1 New York :|bKatherine Tegen Books, an imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers,|c[2013]
  • 300 ## 526 pages ;|c22 cm.

However, this is not RDA policy and therefore Minerva is not following the Library of Congress on this. So if you see a record like this you should add the second 264 field and the two dates in the 008.
