Maine Author Headings

The subject heading “Maine Author” is not used in the Minerva catalog. The heading “Authors, American–Maine” may only be used for books about a Maine author. It should not be used for books that are written by Maine authors.

The correct way to indicate that bibliographical material was created by a Maine author is to use a 545 field to convey this information.

The note should be formulated to contain the phrase “Maine author” for keyword searching, as well as the name of the author and the author’s connection to Maine, for clarity. For example:

545 0_ Maine author.|bHarriet Beecher Stowe lived in Brunswick, Maine from 1850-1852. (The explanatory information should be placed in a “b” subfield.)

Use the same method when a “Maine note” is used for an illustrator, editor, composer, etc. Instead of “author”, use the term that is used in the material itself.
