Attaching vs. Creating a New Bib

When deciding whether to attach to an existing bib record versus creating a new one, refer to the rules outlined in the ALA document “Differences between, changes within: guidelines on when to create a new record.” This is found online at http://www.ala.org/alcts/sites/ala.org.alcts/files/content/resources/org/cat/differences07.pdf
and may be downloaded and saved to your computer or printed if that is your preference.

In general Minerva follows these guidelines with very few exceptions. Those exceptions are noted below:

1.When cataloging video recordings of older titles that have been released by multiple publishers and distributors, you may attach to existing bibs even if the publishers do not match as long as the format and color are the same.

2. Paperback editions of print books may be attached to bibs for the hardcover editions and vice versa if the number of pages is within 5 pages more or less than the original. Likewise, if the height of the book is with 5 cm of the original, you may attach. However, revised editions or those with additional content should be cataloged on separate records.
Variations in publisher name may be acceptable when there is a known connection (e.g.,
Penguin and their children’s paperback line, Puffin). Acceptable variations include:
 Penguin & Puffin Books
 Scarecrow Education & Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group
 HQN & Mira
It can be useful to check the publisher’s website or Google when all the information in a record
is a match except the publishing company.
Trade paperbacks are often able to share records with hardcover books. However, mass-market
paperbacks seldom can be attached to a record for a hardcover copy.

3. An audiobook on CD may be attached to an existing bib for the same title that may have been released by a different publisher if the duration, number of discs, and narrator are the same.
